7 body language tips to impress at your next job interview
Body language is so important and can make
or break your interview. If you believe you are saying all the right things but
still getting rejected, your body language could be the issue- follow these
tips for interview success!
- · Posture
Consider your posture. A characteristic thing for
individuals to do is slouching and folding their arms – this appears as though
you're making yourself littler, protecting yourself, and gives off signs that
you are nervous. Relax your body, uncross your arms or legs and incline forwards
a little from the waist to demonstrate to your interviewer that you are engaged.
- · Calmness
You will appear nervous and the interviewer will be less
disposed to have trust in you if you are fidgeting or playing with rings and
other accessories. Concentrate on your
breathing – breathe deeply and slowly which will moderate your heart beat and
make you feel more relaxed and less anxious.
- · Hand movements
Keep them calm and just to stress your point –
palms upwards indicate honesty. Touching your heart can mean that what you are
stating is trustworthy and originates from the heart. Steepling shows certainty
and the converse of this is clasping or crushing your hands together with intertwined
fingers, which is an indication of tension- try not to do this.
- · Mirroring
This is a clever strategy, however, should be done inconspicuously.
Reflect any positive signals or hand gestures, delaying 10 seconds before doing
it– you can likewise copy their speech, mirroring their vocabulary or language
or demonstrating the same rate and volume of speech. Individuals trust people
who are like themselves, so this will help you seem more likeable to them.
- · Eye contact
it’s normal for individuals to look down or avoid eye contact
from the interviewer however by looking at them you'll be declaring your
honesty and trustworthiness. Rather than gazing into the interviewer’s eyes,
interchange between their left eye, right eye and mouth every couple of
seconds. When you have more than one interviewer, make sure that you look at
everybody, centering your gaze on whoever is talking at the time.
- · Avoid lying signs
Do you best to not touch your face, particularly your
nose and ears – these will subconsciously hint to your interviewer that you're
being untrustworthy.
- · Give the ideal handshake
This is quite a simple tip, but one that a lot of
individuals still haven’t perfected. Too firm and you'll appear to be a little aggressive,
excessively weak and you'll appear too shy– You should instigate the shake and
match the interviewer’s strength.
